What Should I Read Next?

Today I’m asking for your help.  This morning I finished Danny Silk’s Culture of Honor, which I was reading devotionally to begin my mornings.  It was good, gave me some things to think on.  But now I’m stuck.  What’s next?

I’ve had good experience with many good Christian spirituality books over the years.  A few have even been what I might describe as “life changing.”  I’ll leave a list of those I’ve really loved at the bottom of the post, but I’ve got a question for you.

What devotional (or otherwise) type books have really changed your life for the better?  What would you recommend?  Where should I turn?  Leave the author, title, and perhaps why it’s so amazing in the comments.

Thanks, everyone.

My Life Changing Books (in no particular order)

  • Celebration of Discipline, Richard J. Foster, period.
  • The Divine Conspiracy, Dallas Willard.  I could only manage this book for, say 10-15 minutes at a time.  My mind was blown that quickly every time I picked it up.  [Honorable mention to Willard’s Spirit of the Disciplines & Hearing God.]
  • Experiencing God, Henry & Richard Blackaby.  I don’t usually go for popular Christian trends, but this came at the right time for me.  And I was in high school.  Give a kid a break.
  • When Heaven Invades Earth, Bill Johnson.  I’m not in love with Bill Johnson’s writing (he’s a great speaker), but this is the first book I’d come across that was saying everything about the Christian life I’d always suspected and hoped for, but had never heard anyone say.
  • The Cost of Discipleship, Dietrich Bonhoeffer.  Such a challenge.
